Custom Oral Appliances: Precision Orthotic Devices for TMJ and Sleep Therapy
Many terms have been used to describe oral appliances. At TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre Indiana, we call them orthotic devices because they do much more than simply shield teeth.
Each custom‑made appliance is designed to support your jaw and airway by gently repositioning the lower jaw into an orthopedically stable position. With the right device, it is possible to address structural issues that contribute to temporomandibular joint disorders, sleep disordered breathing or chronic clenching.
How Custom Orthotics Are Made
Our appliances are fabricated using digital impressions instead of traditional goo‑filled molds.
A small scanning wand captures an accurate three dimensional image of your teeth and bite, which makes the process easier for patients with a gag reflex or limited jaw opening.
Then we design each appliance to fit your unique dental anatomy and hold your jaw in a stable therapeutic position:
- Night appliances are worn during sleep and help treat TMJ problems, clenching, grinding and even airway collapse. In some cases they may be used alongside or instead of CPAP for mild sleep apnea.
- Day appliances are used while awake, especially during meals, to stabilise the jaw joints when chewing creates the greatest force.
- Bruxism & Sports Mouthguards protect teeth from grinding and during sports. These devices are not intended for treating TMJ disorders but are fabricated to maximize protection and optimize breathing.
Each appliance is finished with smooth edges and polished surfaces to enhance comfort. Because the fit is precise, patients typically adapt quickly and can speak and drink normally while wearing most devices.
Why We Use Custom Orthotics
Accurate jaw positioning is essential for treating the root cause of TMJ disorders and sleep related issues. Generic night guards or boil and bite mouthpieces do not hold the jaw in a therapeutic position. By creating an appliance tailored to your bite, we can relieve pressure on the temporomandibular joints, reduce muscle fatigue and help maintain an open airway. Custom orthotics support our philosophy of early treatment and precise diagnosis.
Rather than masking symptoms, we use appliances to correct mechanical issues that drive pain and clenching.
