What does Dental Hygiene have to do with Sleep? – CE Workshop
The TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre is offering a free Continuing Education Course for hygienists, assistants, team members, and dentists to help you better understand the root causes of your patients’ health issues including chronic pain and sleep disorders. At the request of the local dental community, Dr. Klauer and Heather Banks, NP will host a night of recent case studies and discussion on screening your hygiene patients for TMD, craniofacial pain, headaches, migraines, and sleep disordered breathing. Join us for Champagne and Charcuterie as they illustrate how to better treat our patients and the problems with craniofacial pain and sleep.
During this Champagne & Charcuterie event, you will learn:
- A 60 second screening protocol for adult and pediatric sleep disordered breathing
- What is “normal” TMJ Function and “normal” sleep
- When you should encourage and refer your patient to their Primary Care Physician
- What a sleep test is, how to get one, and who locally is doing them
- What Myofunctional Therapy is all about and when or if it is indicated
- The hype about Tongue Tie/Lip Ties and Laser Therapy
- Why a patient would start orthodontics and orthopedic development at 4-6 years old vs. 10-12 years old
The reality is, as a dental hygienist, routine dental care gives you a front row seat into identifying signs and symptoms of TMD, craniofacial pain, headaches, migraines and sleep disordered breathing. No other place in healthcare does a provider get to spend 30-60 minutes with a patient 2x a year, The ADA practice parameters came out in 2017 stating that dental practitioners need to be screening for these dysfunctions. The problem is that most educational institutions do not provide this training thus there is a gap to fill. In this 90-minute interactive CE event, Dr. Klauer and his team will update you on what you need to know. You will leave this event armed with some new tools, information and a better understanding of how much you can impact your patients overall well-being.
