In short, a functional frenuloplasty is a surgical procedure sometimes called a tongue-tie release. It is needed when a child is tongue-tied, meaning that the thin piece of skin beneath the tongue that anchors it to the mouth (the frenum or frenulum) is too short or too far forward, limiting the tongue’s range of motion.
When a child (or an adult) is tongue tied, it can cause oral health issues, make it difficult to eat and swallow, and can even disrupt sleep. To correct this condition, your doctor can perform a functional frenuloplasty to cut the frenum just the right amount so that the tongue will have full range of motion.
The procedure does not take long to perform and has a very high success rate. You will notice an immediate improvement, and once fully healed, your child’s tongue will be able to move freely and naturally, without restriction or pain.
